Ankle Sprain Causes, Symptoms & Treatment at AMI Clinic Bedford

An ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments that surround the ankle joint. An ankle sprain typically happens accidently when you twist or turn your ankle in an awkward or sudden way. This can stretch or tear the ligaments that hold your ankle bones together.

All ligaments have a specific range of motion and boundaries that allow them to keep the joints stabilized. When ligaments surrounding the ankle are pushed past these boundaries, it causes a sprain.

Common causes that can contribute to an increased risk of ankle sprains:

  • Weak muscles/tendons that cross the ankle joint
  • Weak or lax ligaments
  • Inadequate joint proprioception (i.e. sense of joint position)
  • Running on uneven surfaces;
  • Shoes with inadequate support

An ankle sprain can be categorised into three sections:

  • Grade 1 ankle sprain- mild damage to a ligament or ligaments without instability of the affected joint
  • Grade 2 ankle sprain - partial tear to the ligament, in which it is stretched to the point that it becomes loose
  • Grade 3 ankle sprain - complete tear of a ligament, causing instability in the affected joint

Symptoms of an ankle sprain:

  • Swelling and tenderness
  • Pain when walking or moving the foot/ankle
  • Inability or struggle to put complete weight onto the foot
  • Stiffness and general pain within the ankle joint area
